Cells- OctoberStudents will learn about plant and animal cells by observing them under a microscope.
PREP: May need to make copies. Need onion slices & pond water. Please allot time for cutting the onion.

Cells 2- NovemberStudents will learn and compare the part of a plant and animal cells by making a model of each.
PREP: May need to make copies of labels.

States of Matter- FebruaryThrough a hands on experiment students will combine liquids and solids to create a mixture and a solution. When the mixture and solution are combined they cause a chemical reaction.
PREP: Need warm water- can use microwave or the water heating pitcher next to the microwave.

Molecules- AprilStudents will learn all matter is composed of particles called atoms, and all matter is made up of different combinations of atoms called molecules.
PREP: May need to make copies.

Engineering: Strong as Newspaper- MayStudents make a simple but strong structure from tubes made from rolled up newspaper. Once constructed, students use weights to measure how strong their structure really is.

Weather- JanuaryStudents develop a model using an example to describe ways the geosphere, biosphere, hydrosphere, and/or atmosphere interact, describe and graph the amounts and percentages of water and fresh water in various reservoirs to provide evidence about the distribution of water on Earth, and obtain and combine information about ways individual communities use science ideas to protect the Earth’s resources and environment.

Digestion- (IF TIME)Students will learn the parts of the digestive system (mouth, esophagus, stomach, small and large intestines) and that they are folded up inside their body. In this lab they will make models of their own digestive system by measuring & cutting yarn to represent lengths of different parts of the system, and knotting the pieces of yarn together to form one long string.
